The legislators say that proposed regulations could endanger the state’s economy.
Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska have proposed the Congressional Review Act that would review the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to regulate the use of leaded aviation gas, saying that it will increase fuel costs for their many citizens who regularly use small aircraft.
“Our vast size and remote communities mean smaller, piston aircrafts that use leaded avgas are often the only means of transportation for some Alaskans, and the only way to get food, building materials, and medical supplies,” said Senator Murkowski as she introduced the act to the Senate floor.
The EPA updated its regulation on leaded aviation gas after an agency report found that the emissions from the fuel have become the dominant source of lead emissions in the United States, alleging that this violates the Clean Air Act. Leaded aviation fuel is primarily used by aircraft that carry less than 10 people, which includes the majority of planes operated in the state of Alaska.
